I edited Andrea Lewis’s new memoir Dramaville is not a place; it’s a state of mind. While working on the manuscript, I was not only gripped by the story, but bowled over by Andrea’s willingness to dig into the sadness of her past and work her way towards physical health and emotional freedom.
As soon as I began reading her story, I knew I wanted readers to get to know her. Her interview follows.

Why did you decide to write your memoir, Dramaville?
In August 2010 I became frustrated with my life. I felt unfulfilled despite having a stable job and owning my own condo. Then I had what Oprah refers to as an AHA moment and that was to write my story. I admit it was not the answer to my prayers. Exhuming my past was not my idea of a quick-fix solution. So I resisted as long as I could, then one day I started to write and I could not stop.
How did you cope with reliving unpleasant events so you could write about them?
I had a great deal of support along my writing journey. I went to see my therapist on a regular basis. I met up with a friend every week for coffee. I journaled daily. I meditated, practiced yoga and walked outdoors in nature.
I also screamed in frustration, cried and punched pillows in order to channel the intense emotions I experienced. It was not easy!
What did you learn as a result of working on your memoir?
The reason I never gave up was that I believed in healing myself, I was going to help others by sharing my story. Most importantly I learned some very valuable lessons: self-love, self-acceptance and to take responsibility for my life, instead of blaming others for my unhappiness.
What advice would you offer aspiring writers who are considering writing a book?
Drop all of the excuses not to write. There will never be a perfect time, and you don’t need to start at the beginning. Just write and write regularly in order to hone your craft. Most importantly never, ever, ever give up. Courage 2 Create and Jeff Goins are excellent resources for writers.
